There was more of a community focus in the past and less emphasis on having an exorbitant amount of cash or fame to be successful.
Nowadays, for many (dare I say, most) people, it's all about the individual.
Two major differences between now and then (i.e., "the good old days" are the Internet and social media.
The Internet has been a double-edged sword: It has opened up so many opportunities for people who have put it to good use and revolutionised their lives.
On the other hand, some happily add to the growing cesspool of published cringe, stupidity and unscrupulous behaviour.
Social media has f$#ked with people's minds in many ways. It has caused a large chunk of people to become addicted to certain stimuli, less patient, polarised, and insecure or way too cocky.
Despite all of this, good people still exist in our society, and there are still actual communities that meet up in person, not just online.
*This is arbitrary, and I imagine the scientific literature out there would have highly variable stats.
